RDMA mechanisms for columnar data in analytical environments
Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia InformáticaThe amount of data in information systems is growing constantly and, as a consequence, the
complexity of analytical processing is greater. There are several storage solutions to persist
this information, with different architectures targeting different use cases. For analytical
processing, storage solutions with a column-oriented format are particularly relevant due
to the convenient placement of the data in persistent storage and the closer mapping to
in-memory processing.
The access to the database is typically remote and has overhead associated, mainly when
it is necessary to obtain the same data multiple times. Thus, it is desirable to have a cache
on the processing side and there are solutions for this. The problem with the existing so lutions is the overhead introduced by network latency and memory-copy between logical
layers. Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) mechanisms have the potential to help min imize this overhead. Furthermore, this type of mechanism is indicated for large amounts of
data because zero-copy has more impact as the data volume increases. One of the problems
associated with RDMA mechanisms is the complexity of development. This complexity is
induced by its different development paradigm when compared to other network commu nication protocols, for example, TCP.
Aiming to improve the efficiency of analytical processing, this dissertation presents a dis tributed cache that takes advantage of RDMA mechanisms to improve analytical processing
performance. The cache abstracts the intricacies of RDMA mechanisms and is developed
as a middleware making it transparent to take advantage of this technology. Moreover, this
technique could be used in other contexts where a distributed cache makes sense, such as
a set of replicated web servers that access the same database.

Frequency of viral etiology in symptomatic adult upper respiratory tract infections
AbstractAimsTo determine the frequency of viral pathogens causing upper respiratory tract infections in non-hospitalized, symptomatic adults in the city of Rio de Janeiro.MethodsRespiratory samples (nasal/throat swabs) were collected between August 2010 and November 2012 and real time PCR was used to detect different viral pathogens.ResultsViruses were detected in 32.1% (43/134) of samples from 101 patients. Specifically, 9% (12/134) were positive for HBoV, 8.2% (11/134) were positive for HAdV, 5.2% (7/134) were positive for HRV, and 1.5% (2/134) were positive for FLUBV or HMPV, as single infections. HRSV-A, HPIV-3, and HCoV-HKU1 were detected in one (0.75%) sample each. Co-infections were detected in 4.8% (6/134) of the samples. Peaks of viral infections were observed in March, April, May, August, and October. However, positive samples were detected all year round. Only 23.3% (10/43) of the positive samples were collected from patients with febrile illness.ConclusionResults presented in this report suggest that respiratory viral infections are largely under diagnosed in immunocompetent adults. Although the majority of young adult infections are not life-threatening they may impose a significant burden, especially in developing countries since these individuals represent a large fraction of the working force
Multi-site clinical assessment of Complete Revitalens MPDS in 2981 contact lens wearers across Europe and USA
(MPDS), Complete Revitalens (RevitaLens OcuTec in the US Market), for soft contact lens care in a large
“real practice” setting.
Method: This is an international multi-center, open-label assessment carried out in 10 countries across
Europe and in the USA. Up to 10 subjects who were currently wearing soft contact lenses for at least 1
year and using a MPS as a lens care system were included at each investigational site.
Results: Data were collected from 996 European and 1985 American wearers, 75% of those patients wore
silicone hydrogel contact lenses. Approximately 94% found the new MPDS “somewhat more effective”
to “much more effective” in keeping contact lenses feeling clean and 88% found the new MPDS to be
somewhat more effective to much more effective in keeping their lenses feeling comfortable in the
evening. Over 93% reported an improvement in vision clearness in the evening after approximately 1
month while using the new MPDS. Wearers with grade 2, 3 or 4 of severity decreased by 11.3, 6.4 and
9.8% over 1 month period for redness, burning and irritation, respectively. After approximately 1 month
83% of wearers declared that they would prefer to use the new MPDS.
Conclusions: Over 88% felt their lenses were somewhat to much more comfortable at the end-of-day and
94% found the new MPDS to be somewhat to much more effective in keeping their lenses feeling clean
compared to their previous care system. The authors wish to thank the eye care practitioners participating in this study across Europe and USA.
Introduction: With the development of society, the concept of quality has become essential within health care organisations. However, little is known about the impact of the structural component of the Donabedian model on the quality of care provided by the Specialist Nurses in Rehabilitation Nursing. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyse the factors related to the quality of rehabilitation nursing care in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Units in the light of the Donabedian model in the structure dimension.
Methodology: Case study of a qualitative nature. We used a non-probability convenience sample, with all participants being EEERs from the same service. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview, composed of eight open-ended questions and a set of eight questions for socio-demographic and professional characterisation. In data analysis, we used the guidelines for content analysis proposed by Bardin (2009) using the Atlas.ti software.
Results and Discussion: From the analysis of the speeches of the 16 participants, in light of the Donabedian model in the thematic area Structure, the following categories emerged: people management and leadership in the service and physical environment and conditions for the functioning of nursing practices. The Donabedian model supported the discussion in conjunction with other references. We found discrepancies in the participants' discourses, specifically regarding the work methodologies and workload distribution related to rehabilitation nursing care. The work method emerges as a hampering contribution for some nurses, while, for others, it is an added value for the accountability of the autonomous practices developed.
Conclusion: We can conclude that the nurses identify facilitating and complicating factors within the structure of the service, which interfere with the quality of care.
Effect of the Active Aging-in-Place–Rehabilitation Nursing Program: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Abstract: (1) Background: It is of great importance to promote functional capacity and positive
lifestyles, since they contribute to preventing the progression of frailty among the older adults. The
aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of active aging-in-place–rehabilitation nursing program
(AAP-RNP) on the functional capacity and lifestyles of frail older adults. (2) Methods: This was
a single-blinded, two-group, randomized, controlled trial of 30 frail older people enrolled at a
Health-care unit in Portugal between 2021 and 2022. The duration of the program was 12 weeks,
and the sessions took place at the participants’ homes. We used as instruments the Tilburg Frailty
Indicator; Fried frailty phenotype; Senior Fitness Test battery; Barthel Index; Lawton Index; handgrip
strength measurement; Tinetti Index; Individual lifestyle profile; and Borg’s perception of effort.
(3) Results: Post-program, there was an improvement in multidimensional and physical frailty,
functional capacity, balance, and perceived exertion (p < 0.05) in the experimental group. Among the
older adults’ lifestyles, we observed significant improvements in physical activity habits, relational
behavior, and stress management. (4) Conclusions: Rehabilitation nurses have a relevant role, and the
AAP-RNP seems to be effective in improving functional capacity and lifestyles in frail older adults.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Adaptation and Validation of the Individual Lifestyle Profile Scale of Portuguese Older Adults Living at Home
Abstract: (1) Background: Unadjusted lifestyles have been the main cause of risk for the loss of years
of healthy life. However, currently valid and reliable instruments to assess the lifestyles of the elderly
are quite long and difficult to interpret. For this reason, the objective of this study was to adapt and
validate the ‘Individual Lifestyle Profile’ (ILP) scale in a sample of elderly people; (2) Methods: A
methodological study was carried out and a sample of 300 older adults enrolled in a Health Unit
located in the North of Portugal was used, who responded to the scale. We examined internal
consistency, predictive validity, and discriminative ability; (3) Results: After the Exploratory Factorial
analysis, a solution was found with four factors that explain a variance of 67.8%. The designation of
the factors was changed from the original scale, with the exception of one dimension, and they were
called Health Self-management, Social Participation and Group Interaction, Citizenship and Physical
Activity. The total internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) was 0.858, ranging from 0.666 to 0.860 in
the mentioned factors; (4) Conclusions: The ILP scale proved to be easy to apply and presented a
good reliability and validity index, based on internal consistency, AFE and AFC. The scale allows
evaluating the lifestyle of older adults, and its use will be aimed at modifying behaviors associated
with negative lifestyles of older adults and their individual needs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Phosphate solubilization and synergism between P-solubilizing and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi
O FSF 7 aumentou a solubilização desse fosfato. The objective of this work was to evaluate the ability of several P-solubilizing fungi to solubilize aluminum phosphate and Araxá apatite as well as the synergism between the P-solubilizing fungus, PSF 7, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to promote clover growth amended with aluminum phosphate. Two experiments were carried out, the first under laboratory conditions and the second in a controlled environmental chamber. In the first experiment, PSF 7, PSF 9, PSF 21 and PSF 22 isolates plus control were incubated in liquid medium at 28ºC for eight days. On the 2nd, 4th and 8th day of incubation, pH and soluble P were determined. In the second experiment, clover was sowed in plastic pots containing 300 g of sterilized substrate amended with aluminum phosphate, 3 g L-1, in presence and absence of PSF 7 isolate and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. A completely randomized design, in factorial outline 2x2 (presence and absence of PSF 7 and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) and five replicates were used. In the first experiment, higher P content was detected in the medium containing aluminum phosphate. PSF 7 is the best fungi isolate which increases aluminum solubilization with major tolerance to Al3+. Clover growth was stimulated by presence of PSF 7 and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. There is synergism between microorganisms utilized to improve plant nutrition
